the butterfly let me get up close

the butterfly i saw on the walk down the hill from the chapel that they used for meetings and performances at the alternate roots meeting. that was a very long sentence fragment.

this is a nice blog that is sort of along the lines of what i would like my blog to be more like, or another use that i haven't USED this for. much. online i get lazy, a little paralyzed, more in consume/read-mode than DO mode. need to get into DO mode. well, i am in DO mode, when i'm not online. i don't know.

anyway, i found that blog via carolyn zick's studio notebook, which also muses/links to more musing about the way artists use blogs.

big fabric love
10.21.04 (12:20 pm)   [edit]
it's too late/useless to comment on this at the blog where i found it, but i'm really likin' these photos of this show by miami artist-collaborators Guerra de la Paz at the art and cultural center of hollywood.

i haven't been to check out the show yet, but i love how they use fabric. when i walk into a fabric store, i'm always overwhelmed by the visual, sensual, tactile qualities of all that beautiful fabric packed into one place. i was sort of delighted to see that they seem to have a similar big fabric love:

We have been working with "clothing sculptures" since 2002. Neighboring our studio, there are rag shops that accumulate used clothing for export to the Third World countries. They house thousands of rejected garments. We've often been mesmerized by the unmatched color saturation of these fabrics and the shimmering of the furs, beads and sequins that peek through. We've often reflected on how to get the same effects in our work and what better way than by using the same materials. (from the Arte al Día article)

in the past, i've bought lots of fabric to do projects with, but haven't always been sure what to do with it. maybe i should drag it out again and see what's up.

WHY do my dogs always have to start BARKING furiously at the parking lot RIGHT WHEN I'M ON THE PHONE WITH IMPORTANT PEOPLE???

when i say important people, i don't mean, like, the vice president of some bank or something, just someone who i would rather be speaking with on the phone in a more professional, bark-free situation/demeanor.

that was embarassing.

also, i've been forgetting to furl (i.e., add links to the listing on the right that says "furl-a-rino") lately, but i found some cool sites with server stories, restaurant lingo, and tips for getting more tips. i knew i'd find stuff like that online. i think this is one of the things that's really dorky, yet kind of cool about myself. a ridiculous belief in my ability to find pretty much anything online.

anyway, watch the furl space. even if i don't always post, i add links fairly regularly. more or less.

i have a bad cold, and

i somehow feel like other twenty-seven-year-olds are older than me.

sorry i haven't posted lately--i've been checking my stats obsessively, though, which is kind of silly. other than that, i've been really busy. i need to get some decent sleep, so i won't get stuck blogging right now.

today's news
10.09.04 (6:35 am)   [edit]
i made an appointment with my endocrinologist! good for me.

i had a good day at work tonight! (that didn't make sense, but oh well.) i made fairly good tips, and nobody got pissed off. at one of my tables, a young couple even wrote a little note on their credit card slip that said, "U were great!" with a smiley face. they had just drank a whole bottle of wine, but it still meant a lot, you know? seriously, though, it was nice. i felt Good Will and Niceness from co-workers, which definitely makes work more pleasant. on nights when i am in an OK mood and i've made decent $$, i like the feeling of being in the kitchen and server station towards the end of the night when the cooks and dishwashers and food prep guys are yelling in the kitchen and two different radios are blaring different music from opposite ends of the kitchen and everyone is running around.

and i got another grant in! this one is an alternate ROOTS artistic assistance grant.

and i spoke with mambo legend barbara craddock on the phone today and she's interested in my project!

and tomorrow i'm going to see the pixies! my dream since teenagerhood! awwww yeah!

and i can't believe how crazy each of those items sound in a string like that. i should elucidate on these things eventually. for now, i just wanted to get them down.

keepin' it minty fresh, hypothyroidism, and fluoride
10.06.04 (5:29 pm)   [edit]
i just realized i hadn't updated around here in awhile, (like almost a week!) so i thought i'd stop by.

i originally meant to talk about health issues a little bit in this blog, so i thought i'd mention something that came up for me today. i have hypothyroid, or low thyroid, disorder. i take thyroid medication (armour, a thyroid replacement hormone) every day to treat this, and as long as my dose is right, i'm pretty much fine. however, lately i've been feeling kind of hypo-ish. for example, some of the symptoms of un- or under-treated hypothyroidism have sort of been creeping up on me over the past few weeks. my skin is getting really dry, my hair is looking thinner, i've been more tired, my period is all out of wack, i find myself getting a little of that oatmeal-brain feeling again, etc. (low thyroid symptoms can include depression, confusion, difficulty concentrating, etc.) i've been kind of freaking out and thinking that maybe my dosage of armour needs to be adjusted ot somthing.

anyway, one of the things i read when i started learning more about this condition earlier this year was that fluoride can interfere with proper thyroid function. as part of several small changes i made to help me start feeling better, i bought toothpaste without fluoride from the health food store and made an effort not to drink regular tap water (here in the u.s., most of our water supply is fluoridated. is that the right word?). i had to stop using this toothpaste temporarily when my dog discovered it, so for the past few weeks i've just been using regular old aquafresh, since we had some from before. i really don't think about this fluoride/thyroid thing all the time or anything, so i didn't think much of it until i was standing in the cramped, incense-smoky aisle of my local sweetwater health food/vitamin store. i finally realized that i'd been feeling my symptoms for about as long as i've been back to using regular toothpaste with fluoride. isn't that crazy?

if i start feeling better soon, this will really prove the fluoride-thyroid link for me...and if not, then i need to make an appointment with my doctor. which i should probably do right now, anyway.
